Today's Stock Market (2016.02.24)

Daily Analysis
Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P by closing time (5:16pm ET)
Dow and Nasdaq during trading hours (5:16pm ET)

  • All three indexes recovered from yesterday's downfall
    • Not only recovering but they actually ended slightly higher than yesterday
    • All three indexes briefly crashed in the beginning, continuing yesterday's crash.
    • However, it rose after a short time
  • Oil prices slightly increased, but still sits around $30
    • $32.23 per barrel (6:50pm ET)
International market
  • Although Dow had recovered slightly today, that doesn't mean that the market and oil price is stable right now. Before the oil price rebounded above $32 per barrel, Dow had dropped 267 points. Not only Dow, but other international markets were greatly affected by the unstable oil price right now.
  • The chief of IMF, or International Monetary Fund, has warned Britain about Brexit, and said that they should stay in the E.U., or both of them will suffer.
  • The shale oil industry of America is greatly suffering due to the low oil price. Saudi Arabia had aggressively pumped out oil to push down prices far lower than what American companies need to survive.
Individual Analysis
  • Apple (AAPL)'s stock is down 10% this year and it is 30% below its all time high which was last April. Apple is likely to report a decline on their sale for this quarter, which is worse for them.
  • First Solar (FSLR)'s stock rose 12.4% during the trading hours today. This was after their quarter report, which showed satisfying results.
  • Many energy related companies were the winning stocks for today as oil rebounded to $32 per barrel. Chesapeake Energy (CHK) rose 22.83% during the trading hours, and Williams Companies inc (WMB) has rose 6.60% during the trading hours.

Today's Stock Market (2016.02.22)

Dow and Nasdaq throughout trading day (5:16pm ET)

  • All three indexes inclined consistently throughout the day
    • Dow soared up 200 points today morning, continuing the winning streak from last week.
  • Oil price slightly rises over $30 per barrel
    • $31.48 per barrel (6:08pm ET)
International Market 
  • It turns out that even OPEC had not expected the plunge in oil price that occurred recently. This has squeezed investment in the industry to the weakest levels in 30 years.
    • Capital expenditure on global oil exploration is expected to fall 17% in 2016, following the 24% drop in 2015.
  • Puerto Rican government has announced its 2nd default in history around January; Puerto Rica owes $73 billion in debt and they owe $1billion to their creditors. The crisis has not been solved, and people are still waiting to get their money back.
Individual Analysis
  • Amazon (AMZN) has experienced a 4.6% growth during trading hours as market soared today. It may be a good idea to buy Amazon's stock, considering that they are very steady and they are starting to recover from last month's plunge.
  • Tesla (TSLA) has also experienced a 6.7% growth during trading hours. Due to today's rise, Tesla's stock has rose over 25% since it hit its low on 02.09.2016
  • Alcoa (AA), an company that engineers lightweight metals such as aluminum, titanium, and nickel, has surged over 13% during the trading hours as Aluminum prices also rose today.

Today's Stock Market (2016.02.19)

Daily Analysis
Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P by closing time (4:01pm ET)

Dow and Nasdaq during trading hours (4:07pm ET)

  • Dow dropped from yesterday, S&P ended around the same from yesterday, and Nasdaq finished higher than yesterday
    • All three indexes experienced a crash in the opening time
    • Dow couldn't recover from the crash, Nasdaq recovered, and S&P came back to before.
  • Oil price dropped below $30 per barrel
    • $29.81 per barrel (3:40pm ET)
International Market
  • As the oil price keeps declining, Standard and Poor's downgraded 5 oil producing countries including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Brazil, and Kazakhstan.
  • Not only the five countries listed, but other countries that rely on oil are having hard times. Columbia had its credit outlook cut to negative, which means that the agency expects downgrade.
  • Britain is currently debating about the British Exit or "Brexit" issue, which means that Britain should leave E.U. now. While David Cameron, prime minister of U.K. and other E.U. countries are trying to make Britain stay in E.U., his opponents are arguing him that U.K should leave E.U. 
Individual Analysis
  • Uber, a taxi company, has said that they are losing $1 Billion a year in China, due to the competition with another taxi app named Didi Kuaidi.
  • Kinder Morgan (KMI) has dropped 2.91% during the trading day. Kinder Morgan has experienced a jump in their stock price at 02.17.2016 as Warren Buffett announced that he has bought a huge amount of their stocks.
  • Amazon (AMZN) stocks rose 1.89% as they announced that they acquired the North American rights to Woody Allen’s next film, due for release this summer.

  • All three indexes saw slight drop through the day
  • All three indexes have similar rise and fall, but compared to Dow, Nasdaq and S&P was more inconsistent and changing.
  • Oil price stays over $30 per barrel, but there is no sign of oil price recovering
    • $30.52 per barrel (6:34pm ET)
International Economy
  • Congress is raising objection to the Chinese company's plan to buy Chicago stock exchange. 45 members signed to a letter that was sent to the U.S. treasury department, and the letter stated that lawmakers called for a "full and rigorous investigation" into the proposed sale, and the intention of Chinese government is unclear.
  • Five employees of ICBC (IDCBY), the biggest bank in China, were arrested in Spain on suspicion of laundering money across Europe.
  • As oil prices stay depressed, production in Canada is beginning to drop: 'The oil sands are making no money on any barrels being produced.' That means layoffs, equipment auctions and cities like Calgary rethinking its energy strategy.
Individual Analysis
  • NVIDIA (NVDA), a company that manufactures Graphic chips for individual computers, has soared 9% after releasing their quarter report. The report posted revenue growth of 12%, and adjusted earnings-per-share gains of 21%, both of which were better than investors had expected. 
  • IBM (IBM) stocks has rose 5% during the day, making IBM Dow's biggest percentage point gainer. IBM shares have received an upgrade from Morgan Stanley's analyst, and also made a deal to buy Truven Health Analytics.

Today's Stock Market (2016.02.17)

Dow and Nasdaq during trading hours (4:03pm ET)

  • All three indexes end higher than yesterday, and they continued to recover points since yesterday.
    • All three indexes were rising consistently throughout the day, and there wasn't any sudden rise or fall in the indexes
    • Considering that the oil price showed unpromising future, this is very surprising
  • Oil price rose and recovered back to $30 per barrel
    • $30.56 per barrel (3:41pm ET)
International Market
  • Warren Buffett, the famous investor, invested a great amount of money in oil stocks. Buffett bought a huge amount of Kinder Morgan(KMI), an oil pipeline company.
  • Gulf investors are now betting on India's market. India had a growth of 7.3%, and its demand for energy is rising in high speed.
  • China has sold $18 billion of U.S. treasury debt in December, and following China, Japan has sold $22 billion, which was even more than China.
  • Iran officially stated that they support the deal between Saudi Arabia and Russia to freeze oil production. Oil price rallied after this statement was made.
Individual Analysis
  • Kinder Morgan(KMI)'s share rose over 10% after Warren Buffett revealed that he has purchased a huge amount of their share.
  • As Freeport-McMoRan Inc (FCX), a copper&gold mining company, decides to sell 13% of their shares to Morenci Mine for $1 Billion, their stocks rised more than 12%. 
  • Tesla Motors (TSLA) made a deal with SolarCity (SCTY) to get batteries from them to enable solar energy at night. This caused Tesla's shares rise 8.71%, and SolarCity's share rise 13.17%.

Dow and Nasdaq during market hours

  • All 3 indexes rose and recovered from last week
    • All three indexes dropped for a moment at early hours but it eventually rose consistently
  • Oil prices also rose today compared to last week when it hit its lowest since 2003
    • $29.21 per barrel (6:34pm ET)
International markets
  • China has invested a lot of money in Latin America; last year they offered $65 Billion to Latin America. However, many of the investments that they made are tanking, and it is going bust right now.
  • Oil prices have soared 5% today, but it looks like its going to give up as the discussion between OPEC and other oil rich countries go invalid.
  • The Stock market seems to be unpredictable as time goes by. Even though OPEC's announcement dropped oil price again, the indexes ended higher and stocks surged again.
Individual Analysis
  • Groupon(GRPN), a social commerce company, rose 41% as Alibaba (BABA), a Chinese online commerce company decides to buy 33 million shares of their stock.
  • Home security company, ADT(ADT), is bought for around $7 billion, which caused their shares rise nearly 50% today.

Trivial But Important Information For Beginners-1 (Market Holiday post)


  • New York Stock Exchange(NYSE) is what people usually call U.S. Stock market
  • Regular market hours for NYSE are 9:30am to 4:00 pm Eastern Time
  • It opens from Monday to Friday, and it doesn't operate during the weekends.
  • Dow Jones, Nasdaq, and S&P500 are all indexes of U.S. stock market. Indexes show how the overall market is doing. If the Indexes decline, that means that the market isn't doing well.
  • Companies use abbreviated names for stock market. For example, Amazon is named AMZN in stock markets. The abbreviated names may be different from the company name, like Alphabet Inc. and GOOG.
  • In order to buy stocks, you have to choose whether if you want to buy from a stock broker or a online brokerage firm, and then choose the type of order that you want to make. You will have to pay little amount of money to the broker/brokerage firm.
    • There are five types of order; there are market, limited, stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop order.
      • Market order is the normal order that you would make during trading hours
      • Limit order executes at a specific price and can be open in a specific time period.
      • stop order is triggered when a stock hits a certain price, which is the stop price of the stock.
      • Stop-limit order is the same thing as stop order, but instead of market order an limit order is executed.
      • Stop order based on percentage change in the market price.
    • Sometimes you can buy stocks directly from the company, which allows you to save money

Today's market (2016.2.12)

Daily Analysis
Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P by closing time (5:14pm ET)

  • Overall indexes rose today
    • All three indexes were consistently inclining during trading hours today
    • probably because of the rise in oil price today
  • Crude oil prices spiked up to 12% today, reaching $29.44 per barrel
    • yesterday the oil price hit $26.05 per barrel, which is the lowest price since May 2003


International Economy
  • Not only U.S., but international stock market has sunk into bear market. The dropping oil price, threats of global recession and fall of big banks has caused this situation. Individual stock markets that have fallen during this week includes Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, and Japan.
  • Japanese Stocks have fallen over 5% as foreign investors dumped risker assets. Not only Japan, but South Korean market has also declined, and this overall fall of Asian market follows the fall of U.S. and European Markets.
  • China is on a massive gold buying spree. This is because Chinese investors have witnessed the recent fall of Chinese stock market, and they want something thats more stable than stocks.
Individual Analysis
  • As oil price are staying cheap, Tesla Motors(TSLA) are having their worst year. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has personally lost $3 billion on paper due to the drop of stock price.
  • Amazon has deployed new shipping robots in their next-generation warehouse. They are expecting that these new robots will prevent fiasco like last year's christmas when many orders didn't make it on time.

  • All three indexes dropped compared to yesterday
    • Nasdaq, which recovered for a short time yesterday, dropped again
    • All three indexes dropped consistently during trading time
  • Oil price remains around $30
    • $31.00 per barrel (5:00pm ET)
International Economy
  • The Chongqing Casin Enterprise Group, a Chinese led group of investors, made a deal to buy the Chicago Stock Exchange, which has a history of 134 years and is one of America's oldest stock exchange.
  • The outbreak of Zika Virus in Brazil, which is a mosquito borne virus that causes microcephaly(a neurological disorder that can result in incomplete brain development of a newborn baby), is dragging down the profits of airlines and tour industry.
  • European bank shares are plunging more than oil stocks; Deutsche Bank (DB) has lost 31% so far this year, Unicredit (UNCFF)is down 35%, and Credit Suisse (CS)is 30% down. Barclays (BCLYF),BNP Paribas (BNPQF), Societe General (SCGLF), and UBS (UBS)have all lost about 20% since the beginning of 2016.
Individual Analysis
  • The famous FANG stocks, which are Facebook(FB), Amazon(AMZN), Netflix(NFLX), and Google(GOOG) are plunging in value. Today, Amazon's share price breached below $500, and Netflix has plunged -23.10% in one month. Only Facebook managed to increase in value due to their strong earnings.
  • As the annual Superbowl approaches, stocks that are involved with foods that are consumed during game day are increasing their values. These include Buffalo Wild Wings(BWLD) and Wingstop(WING).
  • Volkswagen(VOW3), is postponing their earnings report due to the diesel emission scandal, and they are trying to figure out how much harm it would do to their share values.

  • Market recovered from downfall from yesterday
    • Nasdaq recovered from their two-day fall and started to rise back up
    • Dow and S&P increased throughout the trading time
  • Oil price stays around $31~$32 per barrel
    • $31.69 per barrel (5:58pm ET)
International Economy
  • As Britain is in internal conflict of leaving E.U, Goldman Sachs warned the British government that leaving E.U would cause the British pound to crash up to 20% from its current value.
  • The worldwide malfunctioning of Airbags in cars are becoming a huge trouble for drivers, and it might evolve into a recall problem.
  • Venezuela is lobbying desperately to OPEC to cut down oil production. Venezuela, the country with most amount of oil in the world, is in a economic crisis due to the plunging oil prices. Though OPEC members say that they would do something to make the oil price higher, it is not sure if they are going to cut down oil production.
Individual Analysis
  • The cheap oil price continues to choke big energy companies and its related industry. They sustained themselves by cutting down employments and getting more debts, but the situation got worse and now their dividends are no longer untouchable.
  • GoPro(GPRO)'s future doesn't seem bright; their shares have fallen 89% from their high in September, 2014 despite their efforts to improve their situation.
  • Amazon(AMZN)'s share has been crashing since they came up with the plan of making physical, mortar and brick bookstores. The CEO of Amazon claimed that the statement was not made to represent the whole direction of company.

  • Dow and S&P ends higher than yesterday, S&P rose sharply by closing time
  • Nasdaq continues to drop, and it dropped lower than 4,450 points but recovered to 4,504 by closing time
  • Oil price rises up to $32.65 (4:19pm ET)
World Economy
  • Venezuela, which has more oil than any other country on planet, bought huge amounts of oil from the U.S. because they can't refine the oils that they pump out
  • Europe's open border system is about to collapse, and it would cost around 100 billion Euros ($110 billion) to bring back passport control, and this would be a huge blow for the fragile economy.
  • Consumers of India, one of the fastest growing market in the world, are buying more cars. This emphasizes the importance of Indian market.
Individual analysis
  • Exxon Mobil(XOM) rose 5.22% due to the oil price that rose today. However, the oil price is still unstable, and there are possibilities of stock facing sudden drops.
  • Tesla(TSLA) is facing their worst days due to the cheap oil price. Their stocks dropped 5.09% during the day.
  • Energy mineral industry is having the worst 3 month sector performance (-16.05%), and Utilities sector continues to secure the best 3 month sector performance (4.48%)
  • Google(GOOG), Yahoo!(YHOO), and Amazon(AMZN) dropped today. Amazon continued its fall from Friday, 1/29.

  • Overall market was on decline today, and it ended low compared to yesterday.
  • Oil price plunges below $30, bringing overall downfall to market
    • $29.68 per barrel (5:15pm ET)
  • 10 year yield dropped -0.1%
World Economy
  • As oil price fails to recover and maintains its low price, the economy of oil producing countries and OPEC are crumbling constantly
  • British pound plunges to its lowest level in nearly six years, and European Euro also dropped value
  • Australian Dollar also dropped greatly in value (-0.38%)
Individual Analysis
  • Due to the drop on oil prices, ExxonMobil's credit rating, which was higher than the United States Government, may drop from AAA.
  • Chipotle's earnings plunged after the E.Coli scare, which hospitalized 22 people. It seems like this quarter might be their most challenging quarter.
  • Amazon stock continued to plunge, and it dropped -3.95% from yesterday.
  • Facebook continues to secure their rise, and they are still around their 52wk high.
